Deafening Silence

Silence that Speaks Volumes

Sometimes faith on the darkest of days leads to the most profound revelations of God’s character and heart for us. As moms, we are provided with plenty of opportunities to step out in faith. While it is our natural instinct to protect our children, we can’t protect them from everything. That realization often shows up in the most painful of places, observing our children walk out their testimony. We need to surrender and place our children back in the hands of our Heavenly Father, who is able to protect, defend, and provide in all circumstances. He doesn’t guarantee suffering will stop immediately. So much of healing is actually done in the midst of pain and grief. Yet, He is there with us and we are never alone.

I was praying one day for my children. God didn’t promise the storm would cease soon. Yet, He was there, comforting a mother’s heart. It was in one of those moments that God spoke so clearly, “Now you will know My heart.” He called for me to surrender, without the guarantee of the storm not impacting my children. In that moment, the magnitude of the love the Lord has for his children hit like a tidal wave. He promises to be there for us and never leave, yet he couldn’t do the same for His only begotten Son. Jesus took on the sins of the world and in that moment was separated from His own Father.

“My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me.”

Jesus’s words have echoed throughout time, but have you considered the silence? His own Father was not able to comfort His own son. The pain to see Him tortured, mocked, crucified, and killed.

Our Heavenly Father knows the suffering of a parent, and He promises to never, ever leave our children, when He had to leave His own for our sake. Take a moment and sit with that. Let the immense love YHWH has for you wash over you this Good Friday. For those of you who are in the midst of a valley, remember, Sunday is coming…

Scripture

Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.

The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”

And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.

Matt 27:45-50 (NKJV)

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

How your heart must have broken to watch the sins of the world be laid on Your one, perfect Son. He did no wrong, yet He became sin to the point of separation from you. And yet in that separation, we became connected to You through Him. Your love is beyond comprehension, and in that silence Your love exploded over human kind. We praise You and glorify our God who stopped at nothing to be forever connected with His children by sacrificing His own precious Son.

We glorify You and choose to live for You in the beloved name of Your Son Jesus, Amen.

  1. This was so timely. This week, I’ve had such a hard time parenting my oldest and I found myself asking God how could he allow me to experience pain in parenthood after walking through such a painful season of divorce. This new season has been hard for us all. This reminded me to keep my eyes on God.

  2. Beautifully said, we certainly do our best to protect our children, and yes the silence,vI sometimes take a step back.

  3. Beautifully articulated! Our 4 sons are grown, and we are in the throes of conflict and estrangement between the 2 oldest. In short, the oldest is a committed Christian, and the 2nd is not. In this perilous time, hurt feelings have come to the fore. This was so timely. Thank you!

    1. Hi Tamara, I’m sorry to hear that you are in the midst of a difficult time. I will be praying for you and your family. Hugs, Annie
